Zbolt Pick

Cable Railing

$$$

Maximum view, minimum visual weight.

Best for: Decks with a mountain view, hillside lots, anyone who hates a chunky rail.

Pros

  • Nearly invisible — preserves the view
  • Modern look that ages well
  • Stainless cable lasts decades

Cons

  • More expensive than aluminum or composite
  • Cables need re-tensioning every few years
  • Code requires careful spacing — not DIY friendly

Glass Panel Railing

$$$$

Premium, frameless view.

Best for: Windy spots, second-story decks, or anyone wanting a clean, premium look.

Pros

  • Blocks wind while keeping the view
  • Modern, high-end appearance
  • No vertical balusters to obstruct

Cons

  • Most expensive option
  • Shows water spots — needs regular cleaning
  • Hardware must be top-grade or it'll rust

Aluminum Railing

$$

The reliable workhorse.

Best for: Most clients. Looks clean, lasts forever, fits any style.

Pros

  • Powder-coated finish lasts 25+ years
  • Lightweight, easy to install long runs
  • Black is the new standard — looks great with any decking

Cons

  • Less visually striking than cable or glass
  • Vertical pickets can feel busy on long stretches

Composite Railing

$$

Matches your deck.

Best for: Composite decks where you want the rail to disappear into the deck color.

Pros

  • Color-matches Trex/TimberTech systems
  • Low maintenance
  • Beefier, more traditional look

Cons

  • Visually heavier than aluminum or cable
  • Less view-friendly
  • Limited color options

Wood Railing

$

Traditional, builder-grade.

Best for: Cedar or PT decks, traditional homes, tight budgets.

Pros

  • Cheapest option
  • Easy to match deck stain
  • Classic look

Cons

  • Needs staining/sealing every 2 years
  • Will eventually rot at post bases
  • Shorter lifespan than metal options
